Hanse Spirit

[vor]

Die Hanse Spirit fand zum 14. Mal vom 13.02. bis zum 14.02.2026 in der Hamburg Messe statt. Das war nach 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023, 2024 und 2025 mein 8. Besuch.

The Balvenie TUN 1401, Batch No. 8, Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Graham´s 1997 Single Harvest Tawny Port

This wine captures the beginning of a journey – from apprentice to cellar master. It celebrates the profound knowledge of the vineyards and the mastery of tasting, which are essential requisites for crafting Graham’s exceptional wood-aged ports. At the time of the 1997 harvest, Graham’s current Head Winemaker, Charles Symington, was apprenticed to his father, Peter. While the year produced outstanding wines, which were bottled as Vintage Port, Peter chose some of the finest for extended wood-ageing. Over 25 years later, Charles has selected the remaining casks for limited bottling.
The 1997 growing season in the Douro was unusual. An incredibly cold winter saw snow settle right across the Douro Valley followed by unseasonably hot and dry weather in February and March. High temperatures in the lead up to the harvest brought about an excellent final ripening period resulting in a year with low yields but incredible concentration and balance. (Zitat Graham`s Port)

Deep orange-brown centre with intense coppery hues along the rims. Aromas of quince preserve (marmalade) with traces of vanilla and soft caramel and hints of honey and raisins. The wood ageing is reflected in the delicate almond and marzipan notes. An appealing smoky element is just perceptible in the background. Bright red fruit flavours, rounded by cask-ageing but still fresh and vital with an underlying citric acidity which gives the wine balance and poise. Satisfyingly long aftertaste with a subtle combination of walnuts, tea and tobacco. (Zitat Graham`s Port)

Graham´s 1974 Single Harvest Tawny Port

On the 25th of April 1974, a military-led coup overthrew the dictatorship which had governed Portugal for half a century. In its immediate aftermath it unleashed social and political tensions, in the prevailing turbulent climate the family elected not to bottle Vintage Port. Nonetheless, many of the year's wines were so exquisite that they were selected for maturing in cask. For Peter Symington, this was just his fifth vintage in the Douro, but as he gradually took on the position of head winemaker, taster and blender, it became his responsibility to nurture the development of this wine during its prolonged ageing in cask, before passing that responsibility to his son Charles.
Port producers faced that yea's harvest with some trepidation due to the volatile political, social and economic climate. Their fears were, however, largely unfounded as Michael Symington testified in his harvest notes, dated October 1974 'here all has been very peaceful and many report one of the happiest "vintage atmospheres" for many years.' he also reported one of the finest vintages in recent years — the overall 1974 Port wine vintage must prove to be one of the best for many years.' Coppery centre with a pale bronze edge. The broad range of aromas reveals sultanas, quince preserve and a combination of subtle caramel, vanilla and ginger notes. The palate is silky and sensual, with a zest of soft, tingling tannins which continue to underpin the structure and the wine's vitality. The long finish provides reminiscences of peppery spice, tea leaf and thyme. (Zitat Graham`s Port)

Octomore 16.3 Islay Barley, Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky Bruichladdich

DOW´s 30 Years Tawny Port

In the barrel-ageing process, aged tawny Ports are subjected to a gradual transformation through contact with air and wood. This results in considerable evaporation and concentration, with approximately 45% of the original volume of a 30 year old tawny disappearing before it is eventually bottled. Constant attention is needed as maturing barrels and vats of varied sizes will show marked differences as they age. The master blender, cellar master and coopers all play their parts in nurturing the maturing wines until finally a beautifully balanced aged tawny Port emerges. Dow’s Aged Tawnies have a singular identity which strives to balance the proportion of wood character with the original fine fruit flavours. To achieve this style, the Dow’s tasters have traditionally aged a proportion of their ageing tawnies in the larger well-seasoned oak balseiros, with capacities ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 litres. The result is that the Dow’s Aged Tawnies retain an attractive fruit character and lose less intensity over the years, with a deeper colour than most. This, combined with the hallmark drier style of Dow’s, creates unique Ports with a distinctive style.
Three decades of maturation in seasoned oak has mellowed the fruit and has provided Dow’s 30 Year Old with layers of complex aromas and flavours that only long wood ageing can produce. (Zitat Dow’s Port)

DOW´s 2019, Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, Vintage Port

Senhora da Ribeira (The Lady of the River) is named after the small chapel which has stood for centuries next to an ancient river crossing guarded by two castles, one on either bank. Five generations of Symingtons have produced wine at Senhora da Ribeira and unsurprisingly we have a special affinity for this far-flung corner of the Douro. Older generations remember that there was no road access until well into the 20th century, and the adventurous journey from Porto took place by train to the Vesúvio station on the opposite bank, followed by a boat trip across the river. All the Senhora da Ribeira wines are produced at the property’s specialist on-site winery where small batches of grapes are trodden and fermented in modern lagares.
The Quinta is situated in the remote, hot, dry Douro Superior sub-region and commands a magnificent position on the north bank, overlooking a broad sweep of the Douro River. The schist soils, challenging conditions, and high proportion of old vines result in very low yields – amongst the lowest of any wine producing region on earth. Yields can be as low as 500g per vine and are rarely above 1 kg. The late ripening Touriga Franca, which thrives in abundant sunshine, is particularly suited to the southern orientation and is a key component of the Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Ports. The finest Touriga Franca parcels are found in the Pedreira vineyards, surrounding the house and winery and descending to the river. The other essential part of Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Ports is Touriga Nacional. The best Touriga Nacional parcels are in the Vinha Grande, planted in two swathes behind the house, rising to 400 metres. Not as resilient as the Franca, the Touriga Nacional benefits from this cooler east-facing aspect and the higher altitude. This is crucial in delivering the acidity that gives Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Ports their freshness, balance and staying power.
Charles Symington, head winemaker, summarised the 2019 harvest as follows: ‘Moderate summer temperatures, with an absence of heat waves (as we’ve had in recent years) and exceptionally well-timed rain just before and during the vintage, were determinant in shaping a very good year.’ We had an unusually dry winter and spring and come summertime the vines were in need of water to sustain maturations. However, the virtual absence of rain between May and late August was counter-balanced by cooler than usual summer conditions. This favoured steady phenolic ripening, but it was clear that more rain was needed to achieve complete ripeness. Perfectly timed heaven-sent showers on August 25th immediately began to recover lagging maturations, bringing sugar levels up to a desirable 14° Baumé. The vintage started at Senhora da Ribeira on September 9th, picking the Tinta Barroca, Alicante Bouschet and Sousão. On the 21st, bang on the equinox, we had some further welcome rain, and this water top-up was perfect for the balanced development of the Touriga Franca, as well as for fine tuning the Touriga Nacional. Picking was briefly paused to allow the vines to rehydrate and was resumed on the 23rd with the Touriga Nacional from the prized ‘Vinha Grande’ parcels, which was in an ideal state of ripeness and looking particularly promising with small berries indicating good concentration. The later ripening Touriga Franca, from the vineyards surrounding the estate house and winery, was picked from the end of September and into early October, benefiting from clear skies and moderate temperatures. It came into the winery phenolically ripe and in excellent condition, although a little less concentrated than the Touriga Nacional. The lagares looked very promising with good colour and expressive aromas and it was evident that some very fine wines were in the making. Freshness and liveliness, in contrast to the concentration of recent years, are the hallmarks of this vintage. Yields were closer to average following the exceptionally small years of 2017 and 2018. This typically floral wine shows the hallmark violet aromas so characteristic of this terroir, with some secondary aromas of the typical Douro flower, rock rose, also coming through — all lifted, fresh and elegant, reflecting the year’s cooler profile. DOW´s 2018 Late Bottled Vintage Port

This 2018 Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) shares the same provenance with Dow’s legendary Vintage Ports, namely the Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira vineyards, which have been owned by Dow’s since the late 19th century. Five generations of Symington family winemakers have tended these vineyards, deriving from them Dow’s distinctive wine profile, characterised by intense, structured wines with fresh black fruit flavours, peppery tannins and a hallmark drier style. The grapes from both properties were trodden in the on-site modern lagares, which equip the Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira wineries.
Although 2018 started off very dry, with the soils parched by the previous year’s rainfall deficit, the spring heralded abundant rain with the months between March and June all recording above-average precipitation. Soil water reserves were amply replenished, a good position to be in for the vines’ growing and ripening cycles. The wet, cool spring and generally unsettled atmospheric conditions continued into the summer and resulted in a diminishing of the crop size. Inevitably, the growth cycle of the vine was delayed by a few weeks, but a hot and dry August put maturations back on track. Climatic conditions in early September favoured an even and complete ripening of the berries with good levels of acidity that are reflected in the wines’ balance. Yields were very low, but that favoured the high quality that the wines from 2018 reveal. (Zitat Dow’s Port)

Dow’s Aged Tawnies have a singular identity which strives to balance the proportion of wood character with the original fine fruit flavours. To achieve this style, the Dow’s tasters have traditionally aged a proportion of their ageing tawnies in the larger well seasoned oak vats, with capacities ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 litres. The result is that the Dow’s Aged Tawnies retain an attractive fruit character and lose less intensity over the years, with a deeper colour than most. This, combined with the hallmark drier style of Dow’s, creates unique Ports with a distinctive style.
For some, Dow’s 20 Year Old is the perfect example of an aged tawny Port, an elegant balance of mellow fruit combines with the complex characteristics from prolonged wood-ageing. (Zitat Dow’s Port)

Refined and balanced on the palate, flinty and mellowed tannins meld with concentrated red berry fruit and lifted mineral freshness. nuanced flavours of tobacco lead to a focused, dry finish. DOW´s Nirvana Port

Port pairs wonderfully with many foods, but few as perfectly and pleasurably as chocolate. Dow’s wine making team set out together with the help of ‘The Flanders Taste Foundation’ to craft a Port that would provide the ultimate match for chocolate. After a series of tastings supported by scientific analysis to identify the key flavour components of both Port and Dark Chocolate the blend was refined accentuating the floral aromas and the tannic structure of the wine. Dow’s Nirvana will pair well with most dark chocolates but particularly well with chocolate with a cacao content of between 60% to 75%. (Zitat Dow’s Port)

Remus Gatsby Reserve 15 Years Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Celebrating 100 Years of The Great Gatsby.
How about a sip of something legendary, old sport? Remus Bourbon is proud to introduce the 2025 edition of the highly-acclaimed Remus Gatsby Reserve.
Crafted with the finest 15-year-old reserves, this ultra-limited, cask strength straight bourbon celebrates the 100th anniversary of the publishing of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s legendary novel, “The Great Gatsby.”
Legend has it, Fitzgerald’s titular character ‘Jay Gatsby’ was inspired by Remus. Some say Fitzgerald and Remus’ fortuitous 1918 meeting began the ‘drums of destiny’. Others believe Fitzgerald gathered plenty of influence from Remus’ many newspaper exposés.
In any case, it’s a legendary story that calls for an equally legendary sip. Cheers! (Zitat Remus Bourbon)
