Die Weine

1962 Chateau Latour

A cold, frosty winter until March. After a cold and rainy first half of April, the second half was warm and humid. First flower on 10 June. Flowering developed quickly due to the fine weather. The grapes were plentiful and of good quality. Hot, dry weather during June. The foliage was beginning to suffer from the lack of rain, but the grapes remained healthy and promising. Splendid, hot dry August. September was similar to August with a few beneficial showers. The first ten days of October were fine and warm, the harvests took place from 1 to 20 October.

The first tastings were promising: rich wines with a hint of acidity on the palate (very similar to the 1953, with a little more vinosity at the start). This is a serious wine that has kept its promises, but never gained the reputation it deserved, as it has always been in the shadow of the 61. The bouquet presents aromas of caramel; lots of substance; concentrated, supple yet vigorous, with fruit supported by good acidity.(Zitat Chateau Latour)

Weingut Chateau Latour
Jahrgang 1962
AOC Pauillac
Klassifizierung Premier Cru
Anbau 76 % Cabernet Sauvignon
22 % Merlot
2 % Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot
Weinlese 01. bis 20. Oktober

Latour continues to be one of the great vintages for this chateau. A dense opaque garnet color reveals amber at the edge, as well as an incredible perfume of cedar wood, balsam, coffee, black fruits, leather, and cigar smoke. The wine is supple and full-bodied, with sweet tannin, glorious levels of fruit and extract, abundant glycerin, and a seductive, truffle-flavored finish. While it has been drinkable for two decades, it is capable of lasting another 20 years. It is a perfectly balanced, exciting Latour that remains undervalued as well as underrated. 95/100. Zitat Robert Parker Wine Advocate (6/2000).

Sehr lecker.

1962 Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Roberto Matta Echaurren, known as Matta (1912-2002) was born in Chile, and worked with Le Corbusier as an architect. In 1935 he joined the Surrealists in Paris. He spent the war in the United States, where he was influenced by Tanguy and Duchamp, returning in 1948 to paint a huge fresco for the UNESCO building in Paris. Turning from mystical introspection to denounce violence and the worship of machines, he began to paint an alarming world of half-robots, half-puppets.
The tormented vine-root he drew for the 1962 Mouton Rothschild label still lets us imagine the promise of fruit to come. Witness the caption chosen by the painter: “Son tendre velouté séduit les plus rebelles” (Its velvet tenderness will melt the hardest heart). (Zitat Château Mouton Rothschild)

Anbau 81 % Cabernet Sauvignon
15 % Merlot
3 % Cabernet Franc
1 % Petit Verdot

In earlier editions of this book I complained about bottle variation, but three tastings over the last several years from bottles that had been perfectly stored revealed a splendid wine. The 1962 is extremely fragrant, with a dark garnet color revealing lightening at the edge. A sweet nose of jammy black fruits, cedar, and smoke is followed by a velvety-textured, medium to full-bodied wine with no hard edges. It is a compellingly rich, opulent Mouton that appears to have gained character and complexity with age. 92/100. Zitat Robert Parker Wine Advocate (12/1997).

Sehr lecker.

1962 Chateau Lynch Bages

Weingut Chateau Lynch-Bages
Jahrgang 1962
AOC Pauillac
Klassifizierung Cinquième Cru Classé
Anbau 73 % Cabernet Sauvignon
15 % Merlot
10 % Cabernet Franc
2 % Petit Verdot

One of the all-time popular wines of the chateau, this wine has been drinking beautifully since 1970, and continues to be delightful. It indicates just how long a top-class Bordeaux can remain at its apogee. However, the regular bottle size seems to be losing some of the exuberant, unabashed, gutsy fruitiness. Cedary and black currant aromas still prevail, and this wine still has a wonderful, silky voluptuousness that has made it so pleasurable. 89/100. Zitat Robert Parker Wine Advocate (1998).

Sehr lecker.

1962 Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron

Our Grand Vin Château Pichon Baron 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 comes from the very oldest vines grown on the historic plots of the estate. This authentic Pauillac offers an amazing sensory experience with its black fruit flavours and spicy hints. Château Pichon Baron shows great elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. It is a wine that improves year after year and can age for over 40 years in the cellar. (Zitat Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron)

Sehr lecker, Klasse.

1962 Chateau Palmer

Initially underestimated, due to its illustrious elder, 1962 went on to prove itself as a very good vintage. Château Palmer considers it is a wine of matter, less refined than that of 1961 but perfectly structured. The winter went by smoothly. A cold spell at the end of February hampered the vegetation period, which only began on April 10th, 3 weeks later than usual. Progress was delayed due to a cold but frostless beautiful month of April. On 24th and 25th the weather was spring-like and the vegetation flourished rapidly. However, in May, the weather became unstable and rainy and the vines struggled. Things looked up in early June and full bloom was announced on 17th, in exceptional conditions. Blazing heat on 23rd caused some coulure. The month of July, cool and wet, ended with a harmless hailstorm on 26th. In August, the heat and a drought restored hope despite the delay in the vines’ growth the previous month. The véraison, however, was slow to finish, presaging a late harvest. Temperatures dropped with the arrival of rain on September 25th. Harvesting began on October 1st with optimistic forecasts concerning both quality and quantity. It was the most abundant harvest of the 1960s. This vintage represents an architectural constructed wine that has defied time. It is a wine of great sensitivity, memorable for its minty freshness, its elegance and its flavor. (Zitat Château Palmer)

Weinlese 01.10. - 16.10.1962

This wine, like some of the finest 1962s, seems to have been underrated by everybody, including the author. My last tasting, from a magnum with a top shoulder fill, proved this can be a brilliant wine. The color was a dark garnet, with some lightening at the edge. The explosive perfume of red and black fruits, smoke, earth, and spring flowers lingered in the glass, revealing further nuances of incense and roasted meats. Sweet, round, and velvety-textured, this medium-bodied, silky-smooth wine possesses a gorgeous inner-core of ripe fruit, as well as an opulent, round, generous finish. As is often the case with a well-balanced Bordeaux, its life-line seems almost immortal. Anticipated maturity: Now (but I have been saying that for years). Last tasted 12/96. 91/100. Zitat Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

Sehr lecker, Klasse.

1962 Chateau Margaux

This vintage is an example of something rare in those times: a successful late-ripening year. Unfortunately, coming so soon after the extraordinary 1961, this very fine wine was a little overshadowed. Château Margaux 1962 is, after 1961 and perhaps before 1966, one of the best vintages of the 1960s, though it is true that the decade included many lesser vintages. It is a fleshy wine, well balanced, rich and mature; very pleasant to drink today. The magnums have kept a distinct freshness compared with the bottles.
1962 was a late-ripening year which nevertheless benefited from excellent ripening conditions for the grapes. (The picking began 3rd October)(Zitat Château Margaux)

This wine should be enjoyed now for the gorgeous, fully mature, and quickly evaporating bouquet. It is beginning to decline for sure, but the full, intensely cedary, fruity bouquet has merits. The flavors are soft. 85/100. Zitat Robert Parker Wine Advocate (1/1998).

Sehr lecker, Klasse.

1962 Chateau Cheval Blanc

1962 is a very good vintage. It was long overshadowed by the sumptuous 1961, but its virtues have been revealed with age.
Temperatures were very close to normal throughout the growing season. Summer was dry, especially in June and August.
This dry growing season was conducive to water stress very beneficial to ripening. (Zitat Chateau Cheval Blanc)

1962 Vega Sicilia Unico

Patriarch and precursor of a line of exceptional wines, forged over time, whose durability distinguishes and gives them a special character.

With an inimitable, firm and solid style, it has been able to create a unique and timeless taste. A world-renowned icon that thanks to the endeavours, perseverance and discretion has carved the story of.

It is the Vega Sicilia flagship. The qualities of the Tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon in different proportions are assembled to perfection in this wine. Each provides a differentiating factor that makes the wine great in every vintage.

The vines are grown on plots where the land is located at the point between the slopes down from the wasteland and the alluvial plain. The soil nearest the surface is made out of fine colluvial deposits from the hillside with small fragment of limestone. There is abundant quartz gravel deeper down in a sandy main soil. There are many angular limestone boulders on the surface.

Red wine made in controlled fermentation using native yeast in wooden tanks. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in wood.

After its fermentation, its goes through what is probably the world's longest ageing of a red wine, almost 10 years between wood and bottle. The different stages take place in different types of barrel: American and French wood, new and used 225-litre barrels, 20,000-litre vats, each batch is what determines the type of wood and the time spent in each container.

After the stage in the wood, it is aged in the bottle to complete a long and complex ageing process. It will normally spend 6 years in wood and 4 in the bottle.

The different elements in its preparation are fine-tuned in the search of the master line that has guided the wine. Único remains true to a clear and well-defined style, with an inimitable character and style; elegance, strength, ageing capacity... A unique and timeless taste that has elevated it to among the aristocracy of the great classic wines.

It offers an infinite complexity that is gradually revealed, in every sip, the palate immensely silky and elegant, and has an ageing capacity that only a handful of wines in the world can claim. (Zitat Vega Sicilia)

Weingut Vega Sicilia
Jahrgang 1962
Anbaugebiet Ribera del Duero
Cuvee Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon
Alkohol 13,5 % V/V

The 1962 Vega Sicilia possesses quite astonishing purity on the nose with candied dark cherry fruit, eucalyptus, kirsch and a touch of cinnamon. This is what you might describe as a -perfect bouquet-. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, seamless and satin-like in texture: an Unico that is shimmering with untrammeled greatness. Youthful, vivacious and utterly compelling, this is a profound wine that even after four decades is surfeit with precocity. Undoubtedly, this must be one of the greatest Spanish wines to have graced this planet. 87,600 bottles produced. Drink now-2020+ Tasted January 2012. (NM) 100/100. Zitat Robert Parker Wine Advocate. (8/2012)
